NIE provides our sponsors with a wonderful opportunity to show the community how much they care about students and education! The Newspaper In Education (NIE) program is a dynamic project that reaches teachers, parents and school children in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
Sponsorship dollars go directly to assist teachers and students by providing newspapers that go into the classrooms. The NIE program provides curriculum materials, an opportunity for students to have their writing published in the Write On! column and classroom visits to all participating teachers.
We invite you or your business to participate as a sponsor for our NIE program. You can help support this important program for our area students for only $162 per classroom. This provides 30 newspapers a week for 36 weeks, just 15¢ per paper.
Sponsor funds are processed through the Tennessee Press Association Foundation NIE Program making your donation completely tax deductible.

The NIE write-on has been such an important part of my classroom writing, and I am thankful to all those who make it possible. There is pure joy in my students’ eyes when I announce, “We have a published author!” on Wednesdays.
-Mrs. Angelia Hensley, 8th grade ELA, Surgoinsville Middle School
We use it for grammar skills, spelling, math, current events, science, social studies, music, and so many other areas. Students often ask me if they can take their newspaper home to show a parent, do a puzzle, or read more on a topic of interest. This program reaches far into our community.
–Shaylah Schultz, Blountville Elementary School
The Kingsport Times-News has been a tremendous help in preparing my students for the upcoming ACT test and state required testing / EOC’s (End of Course). . . By using the Kingsport Times-News they are fluent with current events, and are doing much better with job interviews and community placements for service hours.
-Christy Waye, Pathways Alternative School
The NIE program delivers so much more than a newspaper to my students. They receive a view of the world, improve reading comprehension, and develop vocabulary as no other resource available in my classroom. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all persons and businesses that support this program in our classroom providing students realistic resources!
-Charlotte Lady-Livesay, English 6, Rye Cove Intermediate, Scott County Virginia
