Write On! Young Voices Speak!

A Creative Writing Column for Students in Grades K-12

The Write On column is open to students whose teachers use Kingsport Times News in the classroom through the Newspaper In Education program. The Write On column is published on Fridays during the school year, except for scheduled breaks.

The Write On prompts are listed on a separate document with due dates and print dates. Paragraphs are due on a Friday TWO weeks before the column is printed in the newspaper. Please make sure that your students send the correct topic each week; it is easy for entries to be overlooked when they are sent weeks ahead of the due date.

Please mark each paragraph with the student’s first and last names, grade level, school, and teacher’s name.

Preferred methods:

  • Submit through the NIE website www.tnnie.com – click “Enter a Write On” button on homepage
  • Email directly to aleano@sixriversmedia.com
(Please, send one email with all student entries as opposed to each student emailing individually.)
  • Fax to (423) 392-1340
  • You may also mail or drop off entries to the office:

Paragraphs are selected for publication according to the following criteria:
Well-written, interesting sentences with good vocabulary, unique expressions or opinions, legible handwriting, some male and some female students, different teachers and/or schools in the area. We receive an average of 300 paragraphs weekly, so it is quite a balancing act to publish at least one student from each classroom each week. Each entry is read and considered, so please turn them in by the deadline. If your student is not published in one column, encourage them to keep trying.
